The First Mistake Of Our Lives

The First Mistake of Our Lives

We’ve all made mistakes in our lives. If you haven’t, you will, eventually. We also made some mistakes along the way. But none of them actually seemed to be a mistake. Moreover, it was all just carelessness. Some problems here, other problems there, and so on. In this post, we will be telling you about what’s probably, the biggest mistake we’ve ever made.

We already told you that we’re a group of four boys. Our friendship is like ‘bones’. The more you break it, the harder it gets. But our group is different in another way. We are like some groups you see in Facebook, ‘Open Groups’. Yes, that’s right. We are ready to accept other people as our best friends, given a condition that he/she is completely trustworthy. For years, we thought that feature of our group was a strength. But it was later that we understood that it was a weakness. We had a friend. A girl. At first we thought it was great to have her as a friend. But later it changed. We’ll tell you what happened.

It was in tenth class that the classes 10-A and 10-B were mixed. Three of us ended up in the same class. I (Tonny) somehow ended up in the other one. Our friendship was rock solid at that time (now it’s even harder). So I felt that I didn’t belong there. So I had to do the thing that most of us does. I begged to the Principal to change my class. In an ‘act of random kindness’, I suppose, He granted me my wish. And once again we were united. Perhaps we should have named our group as ‘MIST()RY UNITED’, as in ‘Manchester United’. But let’s go with that story some other time. So as our classes were mixed, some people from the other class came into our class and vice versa. This ‘Girl’ we told you about, somehow unfortunately, landed with us. We thought, “Hey! Let’s be friends with her!!” So, all of a sudden, the four of us landed in front of her (which almost shocked her). And the conversation began. We have this habit and skill of studying people through the conversations we make with them. So, we studied her and came to this conclusion: “She’s good. She’s trustworthy. Let’s make her our friend, shall we?” And there it happened. We made her our friend. As weeks passed by, our friendship got stronger and stronger. But that moment came which worried us all. After tenth class, usually people go to some other school. So, we thought we’d lose each other. But fortunately, we didn’t. Even she was with us for the senior secondary class. And again the same story about friendship getting stronger repeated. But as the new students came, thousands of new problems began to sprout out. It was war between us, the science batch, and the commerce batch- in which our newly found ‘Girl’ friend was studying. Some students have this disease of making others fight. They always made these rumors and gossips about us. Other students were in a competition mode. They want to fight. So, they plan in various ways to put us down. All this planning goes by the ears of our beloved ‘Girl’ friend. So, it eventually goes by our ears. And then it’s a race to solve all these problems. Some problems can’t be solved. They have to be fought. And so we fight. But all this time, ‘She’ acted normally as our sister (Oops!! I forgot to tell you. As we had a very close friendship, we opted to change her status from ‘best friend’ to ‘Sister’). She never showed any sign of betrayal. Meanwhile the war was coming to its climax. But, due to some unknown reasons, we solved the problems without violence. But we never thought this was the turning point. As the problems between us and commerce we over, our ‘Sister’ started showing signs of a small ‘diversion’. She stopped talking to us about all the rumors. Moreover, we had to ask her for knowing anything at all. There was a small reason for her diversion but that is not relevant at this point and also, it’s a completely different topic. So, we’ll leave that for now. This so-called diversion was towards another boy. He was the mastermind behind all the problems the commerce batch had with us. Even the students of his own class hate him. That was a problem with his character. But another problem was, his style of talking in front of girls used to attract the attention of the girls. But that reduced in the case of the girls in the commerce class, except out beloved Sister’s. She was so into him. He used to say these stupid jokes. But no one EXCEPT our sister laughed. She laughed at all the foolishness he said. Soon it was like an SN2 Chemical reaction. As the attacking reagent came towards the alkyl group, the halogen bond started breaking slowly. As the boy’s relation with her increased, the strength of our friendship decreased. Now she was in a so-called ‘transition state’. Whatever came out from our mouths, she conveyed that into the other boy’s ears. This turned out to be a big problem. She said about one of our friend’s (that is one of MIST()RY) relationship (not love) and plans (with another lady) to her newly found best friend. Now this best friend is like the ‘All India Radio’ of the school. Whatever secret he hears, spreads out like wild fire. Now this hurt the reputation of that other lady. She was angry at our friend. He tried to convince her that it was not a problem. But even then we didn’t believe that our Sister was the culprit. So we started to investigate. But finally, she herself confessed to the lady that she was the cause of this big problem. This when we realize that we had made a mistake. “THE FIRST MISTAKE OF OUR LIVES”. And this was not made when all this happened. This mistake was made years ago, when we made that most unfortunate friend that we call our ‘Sister’. We were not shocked. Our feeling was beyond just feeling shocked. It was as if the whole of India sunk into the Indian Ocean after being bombed by all the nations in the world.

It took over a month to get over the shock.  All of our relation with the girl was over. We never talk. We never even look at each other now. We think of that day, when we made her our friend, every day and think how it happened. How we were so blind enough not to see who she really was. To see inside of her. No math problem could solve this riddle. No type of philosophy answered our question. An endless confusion.

Well, we understood many things from this experience. Life is not always what you think it will be. It is like a river flowing with unsolvable riddles, endlessly into the unknown.  You can never expect what will happen. You will only know it either too early or too late. There is a saying, “One cannot make the same mistake twice”. Mistakes are a part of life. You will have to get over them. But once you get over them you will never make it again. You will think twice before taking any decision. This will get you away from failures. We failed to make the right choice once. Never again. Now, we see everyone as friends, not too close and not too far. If we can apply the same principle in all the problems in our lives, there will be guaranteed success.
